Beat Plastic Pollution
June 8, 2025
Bharat Ratna JRD Tatanagar Residents' Welfare Association (RWA) came together today to celebrate World Environment Day with great enthusiasm and community spirit, aligning with this year’s theme — Beat Plastic Pollution at the Pheonix Park. With active participation from residents, especially the children, the event turned out to be both educational and enjoyable — perfectly balancing awareness with action.

Kicking off the celebration, a lively drawing competition was held for children in three age groups—Grades 1–4, 5–7, and 8+—with the theme Beat Plastic Pollution inspiring their artwork.
The activity saw enthusiastic participation from over 40 children, each showcasing their creativity and concern for the environment.
Residents were given free tree saplings which were to be planted by them in front of their house or vacant space.
The banner pledge activity was a major highlight, as children and adults wrote their messages on the banner and pressed their paint-dipped handprints onto it, symbolizing their commitment to stopping plastic pollution.
The Web of Life demonstration organized by Shri. Vittal Kumar Dhage (Environmentalist and Director at ORDER)—visually showcased the complex food webs that exist in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Using woolen threads to represent energy flow between producers, consumers, and decomposers, children learned how interconnected and fragile these systems are. The activity highlighted the importance of protecting all life forms on our unique Blue Planet.
Next, the children took part in a seed ball–making activity, guided by Mr. Sonesh K Shet and Mr. Thejous from Socials Spotlight. The seed balls were then set aside to dry and will soon be planted in selected areas around the neighborhood.
The proceedings of the day began with a soulful song rendition by Ms. Subhalakshmi & team.
This was followed by lighting of candles led by Mr. Subramanya (President RWA) and the introduction of our esteemed chief guests Prof. Mohan Kumar and Prof. Raghu Prasad and Mrs. Raghu Prasad. Each took the stage to speak passionately about the harmful effects of plastic on our planet. Their words resonated deeply with the audience, offering practical insights on how small lifestyle changes can lead to significant environmental impact.
This was followed by Mr. George Verghese (Vice-President RWA & Head of Environment Sub-Committee), who highlighted several green initiatives undertaken by the association — including efforts to keep Tatanagar clean, tree plantation drives, and various campaigns to raise environmental awareness.
